AFL 2026 Fixture Release Sparks US Interest As League Expands...

The Australian Football League (AFL) unveiled its 2026 season fixture today, drawing unexpected attention from American sports fans. The schedule includes historic matches in Los Angeles and New York, marking the league's first official games on US soil.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan confirmed the international expansion during a press conference in Melbourne early Thursday local time. "This is a pivotal moment for our code," McLachlan said. "We're bringing Australia's game to the world's biggest sports market."

The fixture shows the Sydney Swans will face Collingwood at LA's SoFi Stadium on May 9, 2026, followed by a Richmond vs. Carlton clash at New York's MetLife Stadium on May 23. Both matches will air live on ESPN in primetime slots, part of the network's new five-year broadcast deal.

US interest spiked after TMZ Sports reported last night that several Hollywood celebrities purchased premium tickets. Google search data shows "AFL fixture 2026" queries up 380% in America since the announcement.

Sports business analysts note the timing aligns with growing US interest in alternative football codes. The NFL recently partnered with Australia for developmental programs, while streaming platforms have seen Australian rules football viewership triple since 2022.

Australian expat communities in major US cities have organized watch parties for months. "This makes me homesick in the best way," said Chicago-based Adelaide native Liam Peterson. "Finally showing my American friends what real footy looks like."

The full 2026 AFL fixture includes 207 matches across 23 rounds, beginning March 19 in Melbourne. League officials confirm all US games will feature modified rules demonstrations and fan engagement events targeting American audiences.

Ticket presales for the US matches begin March 15 through Ticketmaster, with general admission opening April 1. Prices range from $49 for bleacher seats to $350 for premium midfield positions at both venues.
