Bobby Witt Jr. Signs Record-Breaking Contract With Royals...
Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. has agreed to an 11-year, $288.7 million contract extension, the largest deal in franchise history. The agreement, announced Monday, locks in the 23-year-old superstar through the 2037 season and includes a three-year club option that could push the total value to $377.7 million.
The deal comes just days before Opening Day and solidifies Witt as the cornerstone of the Royals' rebuilding efforts. Kansas City has struggled in recent years but sees Witt as the key to returning to contention. He batted .276 with 30 home runs and 49 stolen bases last season, joining the elite 30-30 club.
Witt's extension is trending nationally as it represents a major commitment by small-market Kansas City to retain homegrown talent. The Royals drafted Witt second overall in 2019 out of Colleyville Heritage High School in Texas, where his father Bobby Witt Sr. pitched in the majors for 16 seasons.
Fans in Kansas City celebrated the news, with many calling it a turning point for the franchise. The Royals haven't reached the playoffs since winning the 2015 World Series but now have their brightest young star secured long-term. Witt's combination of power, speed and defensive ability makes him one of baseball's most exciting players.
The contract includes a full no-trade clause and $89 million in deferred money to help the Royals manage payroll. Witt will earn $2 million this season before the extension kicks in next year. His $28.7 million average annual value ranks among the highest for position players.
Royals owner John Sherman called the deal "a historic day for our organization" during Monday's press conference. General manager J.J. Picollo said the team began extension talks with Witt's agents last summer and finalized terms over the weekend in Surprise, Arizona, where the Royals hold spring training.
Witt becomes the latest young star to secure a massive extension before reaching free agency, following recent deals for Atlanta's Ronald Acuña Jr. and Seattle's Julio RodrÃguez. The shortstop market has exploded in value since San Diego's Fernando Tatis Jr. signed a 14-year, $340 million deal in 2021.
Analysts note the Royals took a calculated risk by committing to Witt before he reaches his prime. However, his rare five-tool potential and leadership qualities made the gamble worthwhile. Witt has embraced being the face of the franchise since his 2022 debut.
The contract announcement comes as MLB prepares to open its 2026 season next week. Kansas City hosts the Chicago White Sox on March 28 at Kauffman Stadium, where Witt will now be the centerpiece for years to come.
