Carlton Captain Sam Walsh Suffers Hamstring Injury Ahead Of AFL Season...
Carlton Blues star Sam Walsh has suffered a hamstring injury during preseason training, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2026 AFL season. The club confirmed scans revealed a moderate strain that will sideline the 25-year-old midfielder for 4-6 weeks, potentially causing him to miss Round 1 against Richmond on March 12.
Walsh, who took over as Carlton captain this offseason following Patrick Cripps' retirement, injured his left hamstring during a high-intensity drill at Ikon Park on Monday. The 2021 Brownlow Medal runner-up pulled up sore after a sprint session and was immediately sent for medical assessment.
"It's disappointing timing but we'll take a cautious approach with Sam's recovery," Carlton head of football Brad Lloyd told reporters Thursday. "He's such an important player for us, so we won't rush him back until he's 100% ready."
The injury comes at a critical time for the Blues, who enter the season as premiership contenders after reaching last year's preliminary final. Walsh had been in strong form during the preseason, averaging 28 disposals in practice matches against Collingwood and Geelong.
Fans expressed concern on social media, with #WalshWatch trending on Australian Twitter as supporters debated whether Carlton should rest their new captain through March. The club hasn't ruled out Walsh playing in their final preseason match against Essendon on March 5, but medical staff will monitor his progress daily.
This marks Walsh's first significant soft-tissue injury since 2022, when he missed six games with a back issue. The durable midfielder played all 25 matches last season, earning his third consecutive All-Australian selection while averaging 31.2 disposals per game.
Carlton has depth in the midfield with Adam Cerra, George Hewett and emerging youngster Ollie Hollands all capable of filling Walsh's role. However, his potential absence creates leadership questions for new coach Michael Voss, who planned to build his game plan around Walsh's elite ball-winning ability.
The Blues open their season against traditional rivals Richmond at the MCG in a marquee Thursday night matchup. Club officials say they'll make a final decision on Walsh's Round 1 status closer to gameday, with his rehabilitation program set to intensify next week.
