DIY Oregano Oil Gains Popularity As Natural Cold Remedy In US...

Americans are turning to homemade oregano oil as a powerful natural remedy during this year's severe cold and flu season. Searches for "how to make oregano oil" have spiked 240% this month as people seek alternatives to over-the-counter medications, according to Google Trends data.

Oregano oil contains carvacrol, a compound with proven antimicrobial properties that may help fight infections. A 2021 study in the Journal of Applied Microbiology found oregano oil effective against several respiratory pathogens. This scientific backing has contributed to its growing mainstream appeal.

How to Make Oregano Oil at Home

Making oregano oil requires just two ingredients: fresh oregano leaves and a carrier oil like olive or coconut oil. The process involves crushing the leaves to release their oils, then steeping them in the carrier oil for 2-4 weeks. Some herbalists recommend a quicker method using gently heated oil for immediate use.

"We've seen triple the sales of organic oregano plants this winter," reports Sarah Wilkins, buyer for Urban Garden Centers nationwide. "People want control over what they're putting in their bodies, especially when traditional medicine is in short supply."

Practical Uses and Precautions

Natural health practitioners recommend oregano oil for sore throats, sinus infections, and immune support. The diluted oil can be used in steam inhalations, topical applications, or taken internally in very small doses. However, experts warn against using undiluted oil, which can cause irritation.

The FDA hasn't evaluated oregano oil's medicinal claims, but its popularity continues growing alongside other home remedies. This reflects a broader trend of Americans taking health matters into their own hands during ongoing drug shortages and healthcare access challenges.

As winter illnesses persist, many find comfort in having an accessible, natural option readily available. "It's become part of our family's wellness toolkit," says Colorado mother Jenna Reynolds, who started making her batch last month. "When my kids started getting coughs, we were glad to have something prepared."
