F1 Prospect Kimi Antonelli Crashes In Testing, Raising Safety Concerns...

Formula 1 prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli was involved in a high-speed crash during private testing at Imola on Friday, sparking fresh safety discussions ahead of his anticipated F1 debut. The 17-year-old Mercedes junior driver walked away unharmed after his Formula 2 car made heavy contact with the barriers at the Variante Alta chicane.

The incident occurred during wet-weather running as Antonelli prepares for his F2 championship campaign with Prema Racing. Track marshals immediately deployed red flags while medical personnel attended to the Italian teenager, who was cleared after precautionary checks.

Antonelli's crash is trending in the U.S. as American F1 fans closely follow the phenom many consider Lewis Hamilton's potential successor at Mercedes. The team has been evaluating Antonelli for a 2025 seat following Hamilton's shock move to Ferrari.

Safety concerns resurfaced after onboard footage showed Antonelli's car snapping suddenly under braking in damp conditions. The FIA has opened a routine investigation into the crash, which damaged critical barriers at the historic Italian circuit.

"The car took a big hit but the safety systems did their job perfectly," Prema Racing team principal Rene Rosin told Motorsport.com. Antonelli later tweeted: "All good everyone. Back at it tomorrow."

The crash comes during a crucial evaluation period for Antonelli, who skipped Formula 3 entirely. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had planned to watch the Imola test session personally before canceling due to unrelated commitments.

U.S. interest spiked as Antonelli represents the latest young talent in F1's ongoing youth movement. American fans have particularly followed his progress since he dominated last year's Formula Regional European Championship with 14 wins.

Friday's incident marks Antonelli's first major crash since his rapid ascent through junior formulas began. The FIA confirmed the Imola barriers will be fully repaired before the circuit hosts May's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Weather conditions are expected to improve for Saturday's scheduled test session. Antonelli remains on track to make his F2 debut at Bahrain on March 29.
