How To Spot And Treat Constipation In Cats...

Cat owners across the U.S. are searching for signs of feline constipation as veterinarians report a seasonal uptick in cases. The topic is trending today due to colder winter weather reducing cats' activity levels and hydration, key factors in digestive health.

Constipation occurs when a cat struggles to pass stool or has infrequent bowel movements. Common symptoms include straining in the litter box, small hard stools, or vocalizing during elimination. Some cats may lose appetite or show abdominal discomfort.

"We see more constipation cases in winter when cats drink less water and exercise decreases," says Dr. Emily Parker of the American Veterinary Medical Association. "Longhaired breeds are especially prone due to hairball formation."

Dehydration is a leading cause, as many cats naturally reduce water intake in colder months. Dry food diets can exacerbate the problem. Veterinarians recommend adding wet food, water fountains, or broth to meals to increase fluid consumption.

Hairballs from excessive grooming and ingested foreign objects like string or bones can also cause blockages. Regular brushing helps minimize hair ingestion, while keeping small objects out of reach prevents dangerous obstructions.

Mild cases may resolve with increased hydration and fiber supplements like pumpkin puree. For persistent constipation lasting over 48 hours, veterinary intervention is crucial. Untreated cases can lead to megacolon, a serious condition requiring surgery.

Pet owners should monitor litter box habits closely. "One missed bowel movement isn't necessarily alarming," notes Dr. Parker, "but if your cat strains repeatedly without producing stool, it's time to call your vet."

The AVMA recommends annual check-ups to catch early signs of digestive issues. For senior cats or those with chronic conditions, more frequent monitoring may be necessary. With proper care, most constipation cases can be prevented or quickly resolved.
