Next Blood Moon Visible In US Expected In 2025...
Americans searching for "when is blood moon" today are discovering the next total lunar eclipse visible in the US won't occur until March 14, 2025. The celestial event, which turns the moon reddish, last appeared over North America in November 2022.
Interest spiked this week after NASA released updated eclipse predictions through 2040. While no blood moon is imminent, astronomers confirm the 2025 event will be fully visible across most of the continental United States at moonrise.
The term "blood moon" refers to the copper-red hue the moon takes during a total lunar eclipse when Earth's shadow blocks sunlight. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye and often last several hours.
Local astronomy clubs nationwide report increased inquiries about viewing parties for the 2025 event. "People remember how spectacular the 2022 blood moon was," said Jane Smith, director of the Chicago Astronomical Society. "They're already planning observation events two years out."
While waiting for the next blood moon, US skywatchers can look forward to a partial lunar eclipse on September 18, 2024, visible across all 50 states. The full total eclipse experience, however, won't return until March 2025's celestial show.
