Oscar Piastri Crashes In 2026 F1 Testing, Sparks Safety Concerns...
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri walked away unharmed after a high-speed crash during Formula 1 preseason testing in Bahrain on Monday. The incident has reignited debates about car safety as teams adapt to new 2026 technical regulations.
The 25-year-old Australian lost control of his MCL38 at Turn 10 during the afternoon session, hitting the barriers at approximately 180 mph. Dramatic footage shows the car sustaining heavy rear-end damage before coming to rest upside down. Piastri was extracted by marshals within 90 seconds and cleared by medical staff.
This marks the third major crash in 2026 testing following incidents involving Ferrari and Red Bull drivers last week. The crashes are trending in the US as American fans prepare for March's Miami Grand Prix, the first of three US races this season.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown confirmed the team is investigating whether new aerodynamic changes contributed to the crash. "We're thankful Oscar is okay," Brown told reporters. "These cars are pushing boundaries with the new rules package."
The FIA has scheduled an emergency meeting Thursday to review crash data. Safety concerns are particularly acute after two fatal accidents in junior formulas during winter testing. NASCAR champion Kyle Busch tweeted: "Glad Piastri's safe. These F1 cars look scary fast this year."
Piastri, who finished fourth in last year's championship, is expected to return for Wednesday's final test session. The season opener in Australia is scheduled for March 23.
