Ron Harper Jr. Makes NBA Debut After G League Stint...
Ron Harper Jr., son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper, made his long-awaited NBA debut Wednesday night for the Toronto Raptors. The 25-year-old forward logged 12 minutes off the bench in Toronto's 112-104 loss to the Detroit Pistons, scoring 5 points and grabbing 3 rebounds.
The Rutgers alum's promotion comes after averaging 18.7 points and 6.2 rebounds for Raptors 905 in the G League this season. Harper Jr. went undrafted in 2022 but impressed Toronto's front office during Summer League and training camp.
Fans flooded social media with support for the second-generation player. "So proud to see a Scarlet Knight living the dream," tweeted one Rutgers supporter. Harper Jr.'s debut jersey quickly became a top seller on the NBA Store website Thursday morning.
The basketball world has closely followed Harper Jr.'s journey since his standout college career. His NBA arrival comes exactly 30 years after his father won his first championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1996.
Raptors coach Darko Rajaković praised Harper Jr.'s work ethic after the game. "He earned this opportunity through daily improvement," Rajaković told reporters. "That's the kind of player we want in our program."
Harper Jr.'s debut coincides with increased attention on legacy players across the league. Several sons of former NBA stars, including Bronny James and Shareef O'Neal, have entered the spotlight recently.
The Raptors plan to keep Harper Jr. on their roster through the remainder of the season. His next opportunity could come Saturday when Toronto hosts the Charlotte Hornets at Scotiabank Arena.
