Sepak Takraw Gains US Attention As Southeast Asian Sport Goes Global...

An obscure Southeast Asian sport called sepak takraw is unexpectedly trending in the U.S. today after viral social media clips showcased its acrobatic gameplay. The hybrid of volleyball and soccer, played with a rattan ball, is drawing American curiosity as international sports gain traction.

Sepak takraw originated in Malaysia and Thailand, where "sepak" means "kick" and "takraw" refers to the traditional rattan ball. Players use only their feet, knees, chest, and head to volley the ball over a net, combining soccer skills with volleyball-style spikes. High-flying kicks and midair somersaults make it visually striking.

The sport is surging in U.S. searches after ESPN featured it in a March 6 segment on emerging global competitions. YouTube highlights of the 2025 King's Cup World Championships, held last month in Thailand, have also amassed millions of views. Urban rec leagues in Los Angeles and New York report increased inquiries this week.

"Americans are fascinated by the athleticism—it's like soccer meets gymnastics," said Mark Johnson, a sports analyst at USC. The U.S. Sepak Takraw Association, founded in 2018, says participation has grown 40% since 2023, though it remains niche. No American team has yet qualified for the Asia-dominated World Championships.

College intramural programs are testing sepak takraw as an inclusive alternative to traditional sports. The University of Colorado Boulder added it last fall. "It's accessible because you don't need expensive gear, just quick reflexes," said coach Lisa Tran. Casual players use lightweight synthetic balls instead of rattan.

Searches for "how to play sepak takraw" spiked 350% overnight, per Google Trends. The sport's U.S. breakthrough mirrors past interest in cricket and pickleball, though experts caution it lacks infrastructure here. Still, with the 2026 Southeast Asian Games featuring sepak takraw, its global profile keeps rising.
