Susan Rice Joins Netflix Board As Former Biden Adviser Takes Streaming Role...

Former White House National Security Advisor Susan Rice has joined Netflix’s board of directors, marking a high-profile crossover from politics to corporate leadership. The streaming giant announced the move Tuesday, positioning Rice to help guide content and corporate strategy amid growing scrutiny of media platforms. Her appointment comes as Netflix faces pressure over free speech concerns and global expansion challenges.

Rice, who served under both President Obama and Biden, brings decades of government experience to the role. “Susan understands the importance of entertainment that brings people together,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement. The company highlighted her expertise in international affairs and diversity initiatives as particularly valuable.

The timing coincides with Netflix’s push into politically sensitive markets like Africa and the Middle East. Rice previously oversaw U.S. policy toward both regions as U.N. Ambassador and National Security Advisor. Analysts suggest her connections could help navigate content regulations abroad.

Public reaction has been mixed, with some praising the move as progressive leadership while others question corporate-political ties. “This feels like another step toward the politicization of entertainment,” tweeted conservative commentator Ben Shapiro. Meanwhile, civil rights groups applauded the selection of the first Black woman on Netflix’s board.

Rice’s compensation package includes $300,000 in annual stock awards along with additional equity incentives. She joins during a pivotal year for Netflix, which recently lost 200,000 subscribers amid streaming wars competition. The company’s next earnings report arrives April 19.

Before entering government, Rice worked at McKinsey and served on Brookings Institution boards. Her corporate governance experience includes previous directorships at Expedia and the Bureau of National Affairs. Netflix shares rose 1.3% following the announcement.

The appointment continues a trend of former officials moving into tech leadership. Last year, ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt joined Special Competitive Studies Project, while former Defense Secretary Mark Perry advises Anduril Industries. Rice maintains her faculty position at Harvard Kennedy School while taking the Netflix role.
