Total Lunar Eclipse To Dazzle US Skies In 2026...

A rare total lunar eclipse, often called a "blood moon," will be visible across the entire United States on March 14, 2026. The celestial event is trending today as NASA and astronomers confirm optimal viewing conditions for most of the country.

The eclipse will begin at 1:42 AM Eastern Time and reach totality—when the moon turns a deep red—around 4:12 AM ET. Unlike solar eclipses, no special eyewear is needed to safely observe the phenomenon.

This will be the first coast-to-coast total lunar eclipse visible in the US since 2019. Social media is already buzzing with eclipse-watching plans, from backyard gatherings to organized viewing parties at planetariums.

"The 2026 eclipse is special because it occurs when the moon is at perigee, making it appear slightly larger than usual," said Dr. Sarah Noble, a lunar scientist at NASA. "The reddish tint comes from sunlight filtering through Earth's atmosphere."

Major cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles will have clear views if weather permits. The eclipse will also be visible in parts of Europe and Africa, but North America gets the prime viewing window.

Astronomy clubs nationwide are preparing public education campaigns. The Adler Planetarium in Chicago announced free telescope access, while the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles will stream the event online.

Hotel bookings are already spiking in dark-sky destinations like Death Valley and Big Bend National Park. "We're seeing 2026 reservations up 300% compared to this time last year," said a spokesperson for Utah's Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival.

The eclipse coincides with Pi Day (3/14), creating additional interest. Some schools are planning STEM activities around the dual event, while bakeries are offering eclipse-themed pies.

For those who miss it, the next total lunar eclipse visible in the US won't occur until December 2029. NASA will provide live coverage and educational resources as the date approaches.
