Victor Wembanyamas Status For Tonights Game Revealed...

San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama will sit out tonight's game against the Memphis Grizzlies due to a minor ankle sprain, the team announced Thursday afternoon. The 7-foot-4 French phenom sustained the injury during Wednesday's practice, though medical staff described it as "precautionary" rest rather than a serious concern.

Wembanyama's availability has become a national talking point as the Spurs fight for playoff positioning in the Western Conference. The No. 1 overall pick is averaging 21.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game this season, making him the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year honors.

Fans flooded social media with disappointment after the Spurs' injury report dropped at 1:30 PM ET. Many had purchased tickets specifically to see Wembanyama's final regular-season road game. The matchup marks San Antonio's penultimate game before the postseason begins April 30.

Team physician Dr. David Schmidt told reporters the decision was "100% precautionary" after Wembanyama experienced swelling overnight. "We expect him to be ready for the playoffs," Schmidt confirmed during a press briefing at the FedExForum in Memphis.

This will be just the 11th game Wembanyama has missed all season. The Spurs hold a 4-6 record without their franchise player, compared to 42-30 when he plays. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 PM ET on TNT.

Bettors quickly adjusted odds upon the news, with Memphis moving from +3.5 to -2.5 point favorites at most sportsbooks. The Spurs currently sit as the West's 7th seed, meaning Wembanyama could make his playoff debut in the Play-In Tournament next week.

Coach Gregg Popovich told ESPN the team is "being smart" with their prized rookie. "We've got bigger goals than one April game," Popovich said before the team's shootaround. "Victor wants to play, but this is the right decision long-term."

The Spurs conclude their regular season Sunday against the Detroit Pistons at the Frost Bank Center. Wembanyama is expected to suit up for that home finale barring any setbacks.
