William Byron Wins NASCAR Atlanta Race In Overtime Thriller...

William Byron claimed victory in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, securing his first win of the 2026 season in a dramatic overtime finish. The Hendrick Motorsports driver held off a charging Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney in the final two-lap shootout, crossing the line just 0.128 seconds ahead of Bell.

The race, which was delayed by rain earlier in the day, featured 16 lead changes among 10 drivers before Byron's No. 24 Chevrolet took control in the closing laps. The victory marks Byron's 12th career Cup Series win and continues Hendrick Motorsports' strong start to the season.

Today's race is trending nationally as NASCAR's new short-track package debuted at the reconfigured Atlanta track, which now races more like a superspeedway. Fans took to social media to praise the competitive racing and controversial finish that saw multiple cars wreck battling for position in the final laps.

The win moves Byron to third in the championship standings, just 15 points behind leader Denny Hamlin. The series moves to COTA next week for the first road course race of the season. Sunday's event drew strong TV ratings on FOX as NASCAR continues its early-season momentum following last month's Daytona 500.

Atlanta's newly repaved surface produced the expected pack racing, with 28 of the 36 cars finishing on the lead lap. The race was slowed by eight cautions for 42 laps, including two multi-car wrecks in the final 20 laps that set up the overtime finish. Byron's crew chief Rudy Fugle made the winning call to take two tires on the final pit stop.

"This team just kept fighting all day," Byron told reporters in victory lane. "Atlanta's such a wild card now with this configuration. To come out on top means everything." The win comes at a crucial time for Byron, who failed to advance to last year's Championship 4 despite six regular-season wins.

NASCAR officials confirmed they will review several late-race incidents, including contact between Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson that took both drivers out of contention. The sanctioning body is under pressure to address aggressive driving after multiple controversial finishes this season.

With spring weather arriving across much of the country, NASCAR's early-season events are drawing increased attention from casual sports fans. Today's Atlanta race coincided with the start of Daylight Saving Time, giving the event strong afternoon TV ratings in key East Coast markets.
