Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight: Best Viewing Times In The US...

The Lyrid meteor shower reaches its peak tonight, April 28, 2026, offering skywatchers across the U.S. one of the best celestial displays of spring. The annual event is trending as Americans search for optimal viewing times amid clear skies forecast for much of the country.

Visible from dusk until dawn, the Lyrids will produce up to 18 meteors per hour at their peak around 9 p.m. EDT, according to NASA. The shower occurs as Earth passes through debris left by Comet Thatcher, with particles burning up in our atmosphere at 110,000 mph.

Dark rural areas will offer the best views, though some meteors may be visible even in suburban locations. "The Lyrids are known for occasional bright fireballs," said Bill Cooke, lead of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "This year's moonless night creates ideal conditions."

Interest spiked after the American Meteor Society shared viewing tips on social media yesterday. Major U.S. parks, including Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania and Death Valley National Park in California, are preparing for increased nighttime visitors.

Weather could impact visibility in parts of the Pacific Northwest and Southern Plains, where cloud cover is forecast. Elsewhere, from New England to the Southwest, mostly clear skies are expected during peak hours between 9 p.m. and midnight local time.

Unlike last year's disappointing display, astronomers predict a stronger showing in 2026. The Lyrids mark the first major meteor shower since January's Quadrantids, explaining heightened public interest. No special equipment is needed - viewers simply need to look northeast toward the Vega star after dark.

Local astronomy clubs from Boston to Seattle are hosting watch parties, with many adjusting COVID-era protocols for larger gatherings. The shower's timing on a weekend night has also contributed to its popularity in online searches today.
